CONEXPO-CON/AGG, North America’s largest construction trade show, is shining a light on mental health issues in the construction industry. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by professionals in the field, the organization has launched a comprehensive resource hub dedicated to mental wellness.

A recent report, Construction Working Minds White Paper 2024,1 showed that 83% of construction workers have experienced some form of moderate to severe mental health issue. Findings show that compared to other industries, construction ranked first in pain reliever abuse and marijuana and heroin use. The industry ranked second in substance use disorders and heavy drinking. The report noted that construction workers are at particularly higher risk for opioid addiction and overdose deaths.

These statistics follow a 2020 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report2 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that found that 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance abuse and 11% seriously considered suicide.

The construction industry has one of the highest rates of suicide at 53.3 per 100,000 U.S. workers. That rate is four times greater than the national average and five times greater than all other construction fatalities combined, according to the CDC and reported by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).3

“We cannot stand by while a silent epidemic of suicide takes place within our industry,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, former CEO of AGC. “We want to reduce the stigma of mental health issues in this industry, let people know it is okay to ask for help and, ultimately, save lives.”

The AGC Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Task Force compiled a wealth of tools and resources, including a series of videos telling the stories of industry professionals who have struggled with mental health. Those are available at https://www.agc.org/mental-health-suicide-prevention.

World of Asphalt and AGG1 Aggregates Academy & Expo set a new attendance record with more than 15,800 industry professionals convening in Nashville for the 2024 event, a 38% increase compared to the previous 2022 record of 11,400. Attendees could see more than 440 exhibitors, including Komatsu, which displayed an HM400-5 articulated haul truck, a WA475-10 wheel loader and an HB365LC-3 hybrid excavator.

“Komatsu is deeply committed to our aggregate customers, and these products help increase productivity and return on investment,” stated Nathaniel Waldschmidt, Product Manager, Excavators, Komatsu. “They are highly productive on mass production job sites and aggregate quarries where efficiency is key.”

Komatsu’s 473-horsepower HM400-5 has a 44.1-ton capacity, exceptional maneuverability and a smooth ride over rough terrain. The articulated haul truck features the Komatsu Traction Control System (KTCS), which provides excellent performance in soft and slippery ground conditions without sacrificing steering performance. It also features the K-ATOMiCS transmission, which is fully automatic with an advanced electronic system to reduce shift shock and torque cutoff.

Developed with customer input, the newly designed 290-horsepower WA475-10 has next-generation technology that helps improve productivity and lower fuel costs. Compared to the previous model, it’s up to 30% more fuel efficient with 8% more breakout force and 20% more boom lift force. Boom positions are adjustable in the cab with the push of a button, and the bucket positioner can memorize three horizontal settings. The redesigned bucket has generous curves on the side wall to retain material better, and a wrap angle enhances pile penetration to make the bucket easy to fill.

“The HM400-5 and WA475-10 are proven production machines in the aggregate industry, and we believe the HB365LC-3 will be as well,” commented Waldschmidt. “It’s designed for operations with high swing utilization such as loading crushers.”

An ultracapacitor captures energy, then charges and discharges it rapidly to power the HB365LC-3’s electric swing motor. When swinging, all available hydraulic power is sent to the boom, arm and bucket for improved cycle times and up to 15% increased production compared to the non-hybrid excavator design. The HB365LC-3 can save operations up to 20% in fuel costs compared to non-hybrid excavators.

Montabert, Tramac and Lehnhoff (Komatsu-owned companies) exhibited a wide range of products for the aggregate industry.

Montabert showcased its HCP 850-R rotating pulverizer for 15- to 27-ton excavators. The 4,166-pound pulverizer has an approximately 32-inch jaw opening and a 33.46-inch jaw depth.

“In secondary demolition, or in breaking and recycling, the HCP 850 will separate concrete from rebar,” explained Aaron Scarfia, General Manager of Komatsu Attachments. “That allows facilities to process material down to manageable pieces.”

Additional Montabert products included a V32 fully variable hydraulic rock breaker in the 5,000-foot-pound impact class. It has 15 frequencies and automatically adjusts the stroke, frequency and impact force based on the hardness of the rock.

Plus, Montabert displayed an SC50 hydraulic rock breaker attached to a Tramac TS14 pedestal boom with a 14-foot reach. The pedestal boom has a 180-degree swing arc, a 2,105-pound maximum lifting capacity and a 750- to 2,000-foot-pound hammer impact class range.

“Tramac also manufactures a full 360-degree rotation, and we use these for pedestal applications to break any rock that’s caught in the crusher,” noted Scarfia. “We will do a job site visit and help customers engineer a platform for them. It can be mounted on a concrete pad. It can be on a steel member. Whatever the quarry needs, we will adapt the base structure to it.”

A Common Ground Alliance (CGA) survey found millions of homeowners planning do-it-yourself digging projects will not contact 811, putting themselves and their communities at risk of utility service disruptions, costly fines and repairs, and even serious injury or death. 811 is the national call-before-you-dig phone number anyone can use to request that the approximate location of buried utilities be marked with paint or flags.

“Spring weather brings more digging projects, for homeowners and professionals alike,” said CGA President and CEO Sarah K. Magruder Lyle. “To keep our communities connected to water, electricity, gas and communications lines, everyone needs to contact 811 a few days before beginning an excavation project — whether it’s gardening or major construction. Utility lines can be buried just inches below the surface. Everyone must contact 811 before every digging project.”

Censuswide, a global insight-driven research center, conducted the online survey of among 1,000 U.S. homeowners aged 21 and over, on behalf of CGA. Respondents cited the belief that “shallow” digging does not require contacting 811 and unfamiliarity with the 811 notification process as top reasons they do not plan to get utilities marked before breaking ground on DIY digging projects.

Overwhelmingly, however, homeowners value contractors calling 811 or submitting an online request to have the underground utilities on their property marked, with 95% citing this step as important. Nearly half (45%) of homeowners reported being affected by utility service interruption of three hours or longer over the past year, with the highest rate of interruptions occurring in the South.

Construction employment increased in 35 states between December 2022 and December 2023, according to a new analysis of federal employment data from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). AGC officials said the employment gains reflected strong demand for construction but noted that tight labor markets are preventing firms from adding even more workers.

“Construction demand remains strong in many parts of the country, especially for infrastructure, manufacturing and data center projects,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, AGC’s Chief Executive Officer. “But a paucity of qualified workers is holding back further employment gains and impacting project schedules and budgets.”

Texas added the most jobs — 32,800 — for a 4.2% increase. South Dakota had the largest percentage increase with 20.8%, which equated to 5,200 more jobs.

AGC officials are urging members of Congress to boost funding for construction-specific education programs this year as they work to renew both the Perkins Act and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

“The best way to address the industry’s workforce shortages in the long run is by investing in construction training and education programs,” said Sandherr. “It is time to stop urging every student to accumulate college debt when many could be making good money, debt-free, by starting careers in construction.”

Thanks to a new U.S. Department of Labor rule under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), some independent contractors may now be classified as employees instead. When distinguishing between the two, contractors need to determine whether the person is economically dependent on the employer for work or is in business for themselves.

The rule adopts a totality-of-the-circumstances analysis and identifies six non-exhaustive factors relevant to the question, according to an article from law firm Ice Miller. The factors are opportunity for profit or loss depending on managerial skill; investments by the worker and the potential employer; degree of permanence of the work relationship; nature and degree of control; the extent to which the work performed is an integral part of the potential employer’s business; and skills and initiative. Additional factors may be relevant, so employers should consult legal counsel as misclassification could lead to significant liability.
